A café on a concealed hillside—an accent in the landscape, a pause in nature, a gathering on the hill.
The brief
BROWN IB KPS sits on a concealed hillside near the Independence Beach Hotel, screened from the street by thick bushes and mature trees, with glimpses toward Independence Beach. The project is inspired by a careful reading of the site’s quiet narratives, bringing together sea air, hillside solidity, and lush vegetation to transform a previously unknown pocket of land into a warm place for communal gathering. Site constraints, including a nearby waste canal and a large lift structure within the sea view, were acknowledged as part of the design process and shaped the project’s response.
Arrival is choreographed through vegetation, where a linear concrete plane registers as a quiet emergence from the hillside. Two horizontal concrete slabs extend from the terrain, enclosed by fully transparent walls that dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior. A balcony acts as a mediating threshold between human presence and the landscape, with built-in concrete bench seating that evokes the familiarity of domestic spaces. Inside, the ceiling feature follows the hillside contour lines and gradually descends toward the counter, drawing visitors inward and enhancing intimacy. The result is a journey through space wrapped in transparency—defined by continuity, warmth, and an unfolding relationship between movement, nature, and light.
