A heritage post office transformed into a warm, contemporary riverside café.
The brief
Brown Riverside occupies a former post office from the early 1900s on Preah Sisowath Quay, opposite Wat Phnom. The project embraces the historical character of the building while introducing a fresh, modern identity that feels rooted in place.
The original brick walls were carefully exposed to reveal the fabric of the century-old structure. Arched openings were restored and paired with slim, black iron framed windows that bring natural light deep into the interior. The design balances industrial simplicity and early twentieth century references with warm materials that soften the strong architectural shell.
Inside, the open floor plan creates a generous, communal atmosphere. Seating flows seamlessly from one space to another, encouraging conversation, rest, and work. The rhythm of the arches guides the visitor’s movement and gives the café a calm, grounded presence along the riverside.
